方修是马华文学史料学术研究最重要的开创人和奠基者。
方修原名吴之光，另署观止、任辛等。他在1922年2月9日出生于中国广东省潮安县。
方修在原籍接受小学、初中及一年师训教育。
1938年，方修随母亲南来吉隆坡与父亲团聚，先后做过杂货店、树胶产品工厂和洋酒店员工。1941年担任吉隆坡《 新国民日报》校对、兼夜班编辑 。
当日军南侵马来亚半岛，方修与友人南下新加坡。1942年1月，方修加入《星华文化界战时工作团》开办的文化青年干部训练班，接受有关抗日的文化宣传工作训练。
新加坡沦陷后，方修返回吉隆坡。1945年，他担任吉隆坡《民声报》记者；1946年担任《中华晚报》 记者。后来，方修南下, 先后在柔佛和新加坡的几间小学教书。
1951年，方修受聘为《星洲日报》编辑，并主持《星洲周刊》编务。1956年起，他被调任该报马来亚新闻版的编辑主任，并先后兼编该报《文艺》、《星期小说》、《靑年知识》及《文化》等副刊，一直到1978年底退休。
1966年至1978年间，方修在新加坡大学担任兼职讲师，主讲马华文学、中国新文学、鲁迅研究等课程。
1997年，方修创立热带文学艺术俱乐部，并担任俱乐部的顾问迄今。方修是最先从事马华文学史料研究的学者，同时也是本地人写本地文学史的第一人。他的重要贡献是开创了马华文学研究，并使其单独成为一门独立的学科。
方修以坚强的毅力，长时间大量发掘和整理史料，最终编选了《马华新文学大系》这一部巨著。这部《马华新文学大系》具有重要的历史文献价值和参考作用，这部著作在东南亚华文文学研究史上享有重要地位。
方修还编著了《马华新文学史稿》、《马华新文学选集》、《马华文艺思潮的演变》、《马华新文学简史》、《马华文学作品选》 、《马华文学的现实主义传统》、《战后马华文学史初稿》、《新马文学史论集》、《马华文学史补》、《文艺杂论》、《马华文学史百题》、《马华新文学及其历史轮廓》等多部著作。
方修的著作很多，写作题材 也广。除了马华硏究著作，著作有评论《红楼梦简说》、散文集《轻尘集》、《炉烟集》和《长夜集》等。方修也是一位诗人，他写新诗，更擅长旧诗。他的旧体诗词结集《重楼小诗》，收录旧体诗词69首，创作时间自1948年到1997年，前后跨度长达50年。
方修在2010年2月中旬,因为肺积水呼吸困难,入院接受治疗,前后住院3个星期。他在2010年3月4日上午10时29分,于新加坡陈笃生医院逝世。
An important literary pioneer, Fang Xiu laid the foundation for the study of Malayan-Chinese literature.
Fang Xiu’s real name is Goh Tze Kwang. He is born in Guangdong, China on 9th February 1922. He was educated in Guangdong, undergoing primary and secondary school and a year of teacher’s training there.
In 1938, he relocated to Kuala Lumpur and took up the position of proofreader cum night-shift editor at Kuala Lumpur’s Xin Guo Min Daily News in 1941.
After the fall of Singapore, Fang Xiu worked for Min Sheng Newspaper and Zhong Hua Newspaper in Kuala Lumpur as journalist in 1945 and 1946 respectively.
Fang Xiu was hired as editor for Sin Chew Jit Poh and Sin Chew Weekly in 1951. He became the chief news editor in 1956
Fang Xiu pioneered the study of Malayan-Chinese literature and his work A Comprehensive Anthology of Modern Malayan Chinese Literature is an important set of reference materials on Chinese literature in Southeast Asia. In addition, Fang Xiu edited many works about Malayan-Chinese literature. He also lectured on “Malayan-Chinese literature”, “Modern Chinese literature’, etc. at the University of Singapore from 1966 to 1978
Besides writing essays, short stories and literary criticims, he also published 69 poems which were written between 1948 and 1997.
In February 2010, Fang Xiu was warded into Tan Tock Seng Hospital for pneumonia. Three weeks later, he passed away on 4 March 2010 at 10:29 a.m.
