林晨是剧作家、导演、新加坡剧坛先驱者之一。
林晨祖籍福建，1919年出生于新加坡，2004年8月29日因肺炎与世长辞。
林晨曾就读于道南小学，1938年毕业于华侨中学。
1930年代开始，林晨以笔名发表短篇小说、散文、论文、杂感等在各副刊上，并积极参于戏剧编导与剧本创作。他的笔名很多，计有白蒙、艾蒙、白丹、白尼、 洪烺等。
1937年开始，林晨从事漫画与木刻工作，也曾在《南侨日报》担任美术编辑。1950年代，他进入世界书局工作，直到1980年退休为止。1981年，林晨加入人民协会担任戏剧组的指导员。他在业余时间除了从事话剧活动与文艺创作，也经常为电台与丽的呼声改编广播剧。
林晨从未接受过正规的戏剧教育，他的戏剧训练是由多年的实践经验累积而成的。1938年，华侨中学毕业后，林晨便加入星洲业余话剧社。中日战争期间，他与朋友组织“四一流动演剧队”，到新马的山芭、椰林、胶园、工地等演出话剧，宣扬抗战意识。
战后，林晨组织了职业剧团“星洲实验剧团”，后来剧团因为经济困难而解散。
林晨曾负责指导数间中学的戏剧活动，例如：南侨女中毕业班于1952年在光华礼堂演出的“归去来兮”便由林晨任导演、南侨中学戏剧组于1955年在维多利亚剧院呈献的“女子公寓”也是由林晨和朱绪合导。
新加坡艺术剧场于1955年成立后，林晨便担任编导多年，先后导演了多部世界名剧，例如：《雷雨》(1957年)、《夜店》(1958年)、《寒夜曲》(1959年)等。此外，他也编导由自己执笔的剧本如《一个有钱人家》(1961年)、《第二次奔》(1973年)和《阿潻叔》(1974年)等。
1970年, 林晨执导的阿根廷名剧《绞架下的中锋》打破了“第四堵墙”的表演方式，创新的演绎手法深获好评。代表作《打破镜子的女人》曾被列为中学生文学考试的必读剧本。
从1954年到1991年，林晨执导约162场大型话剧演出。1991年，林晨在艺术剧场执导最后一场舞台剧《礼尚往来》，从此淡出戏剧界。
林晨擅长于话剧创作与导演，他也喜欢绘画艺术。在1940年代，他就在《风下》发表漫画创作，也为其话剧设计舞台和亲自绘画，例如：《打破镜子的女人》、《酒吧间》、《浮沉之间》和《圣诞财神》等。
林晨为新加坡戏剧界奔驰了近50年，被誉为是华语戏剧写实主义的奠基人之一。他的作品，语言自然生动并反映了社会风气和现实社会。1982年，默默耕耘的林晨凭着他在戏剧界的杰出表现，获颁文化奖(戏剧奖)。
Lin Chen was a playwright and one of the early pioneers of Singapore theatre.
Born in Singapore in 1919, his alma maters were Tao Nan Primary School and Chinese High.
Lin Chen worked in the comics and wood carving industries from 1937 until he joined World Bookshop in the 1950s. After his retirement in 1980, he joined the People’s Association as an instructor for drama groups.
Lin Chen’s theatrical training was accumulated from years of experience. He joined an amateur drama group soon after his high school graduation and he formed one with a few friends during the war.
Writing short stories and essays under different pseudonyms, he also wrote scripts for local radio stations and Rediffusion. In addition, he participated actively in directing and writing for the theatres.
From its inception in 1955, Lin Chen was the resident playwright for the Singapore Arts Theatre and directed 162 dramas from 1954 to 1991. His work The Woman Who Broke the Mirror was included in the local secondary school curriculum.
Lin Chen was awarded the Cultural Medallion (Theatre) in 1982.He passed away on 29 August 2004.
