姚紫是新加坡早期优秀的小说家、散文家兼编辑。
姚紫原名郑梦周,1920年出生于中国福建泉州安海镇,1982年2月18日逝世。他用过的笔名有贺斧、符剑、欧阳碧、上官秋、舒仲、公孙龙、西门风、黑浪、吴笙、唐兮、司徒然、赵旭、鲁明、向阳戈和黄槐等。
姚紫毕业于海疆学院史地系。南来新加坡之前,姚紫已在厦门主编报纸« 江声日报 »。1947,他南来新加坡后,先后受聘于道南学校和晋江学校。
1949年,姚紫受聘于南洋商报,并出任该报的资料室主任兼编辑。他在任职南洋商报期间,主编过《家庭妇女》版、《星期六》周刊和《艺行列》月刊,也同时兼任《南方晚报》的副刊《绿洲》编辑。
1954年2月15日,姚紫离开南洋商报后创办文艺报岀版社,出版《文艺报》月刊。
1955年,《文艺报》月刊停刊后,姚紫即到柔佛宽柔中学执教,也同时创办了周刊《社会新闻》。
1956年至1957年间,他先后创办了《大地》和主编《九月的风》。
1963年,姚紫创办“天马图书公司”。在1965年和1967年期间,他先后出版《天马杂志》月刊和《华报》周刊。不过,这些刊物只出版一个短时期便停刊了。
1969年,姚紫应聘入新明日报主编副刊《新风》,直至1977年5月离职为止。自离职后,他虽然有再从事文艺出版的计划,但始终没有实行。
1981年,姚紫受邀担任新加坡文艺研究会会务顾问。
姚紫的大半生在从事文艺工作,他的著作颇丰且受欢迎。他的中篇小说《秀子姑娘》在1949年出版,总共印刷了1万6千册, 成为当时的奇迹。他的另一部中篇小说《咖啡底诱惑》曾被拍成电影,很受当时人们的欢迎。
《新马华文作家群像》一书认为:“姚紫所写的小说,结构严谨,善于把握气氛,操纵高潮,兼以新旧文学的修养极好,文笔流利,充分表露了他那横溢的才气。”
姚紫在去世前,立遗嘱并委托文友吴俊刚、林范平、郑捷浩、李向等人将其遗产设立文艺基金, 用以发展和鼓励本地的文艺创作,这就是“姚紫文艺基金会”。姚紫倾毕生积蓄创办文艺基金会的事迹,至今仍然令人怀念和感激。
汕头大学教授,也是《海外华文文学史初编》编著者陈贤茂先生认为,“姚紫的作品是留给后代的丰厚遗产,也是华文世界的共同财富。今天应从他的文学成就对他作出正确的评价。”陈贤茂先生认为,姚紫在新加坡华文文学史上,应该占有一个光辉的位置。
Yao Zi was an outstanding novelist, essayist and editor in early Singapore.
Yao Zi's real name is Zheng Mengzhou. He was born in Fujian, China in 1920. Upon, graduation from university, he came to Singapore in 1947.
He was employed by Nanyang Siang Pau in 1949 as Editor cum Manager of its resource center.
Yao Zi started his own publishing company in 1954 which produced a monthly literary newsletter. This publication was discontinued in 1955 and he left for Johor Bahru to teach in a secondary school. Between 1956 and 1957, Yao Zi continued to produce and edit other publications.
In 1963, he founded a publishing firm Heavenly Horse Books and published several literary periodicals. The company ceased operations in 1967.
Yao Zi joined Shin Min Daily News as Editor in 1969 until 1977. He was also a consultant for Singapore Literary Research Society in 1981.
Yao Zi's most representative work was the novel The Girl called Xiu Zi, published in 1949. The book had a print run of 16,000 copies which was considered “a miracle” at that time. His other novel, The Seduction of Coffee was made into a movie that was popular with audiences.
Before Yao Zi passed away in 1982, he bequeathed his money and assets to set up the Yao Zi Literary Foundation. The foundation's objective is encourage the development of the local literary scene.
