赵戎是新加坡早期著名的小说家兼评论家。他为新马华文文学的发展作出很大的贡献。
赵戎原名赵大成，常用的笔名有芸窻、巨星、赵心、笔奴、孔怀、以多、西憔客等。
他原籍广东南海，1920年出生于新加坡，1988年7月27日因胃癌病逝，享年69岁。
赵戎少年时代做过多种行业，后来担任中正中学华文教师至1978年退休。
他于1936年左右开始文学创作。他的作品散见于《星洲日报》的《晨星》、《绿洲》、《世纪路》、《南洋教育》、《新野》、《新社文艺》、《新加坡青年》及《新加坡文艺》等报刊杂志。
1938年，他与白狄、刘思等人发起成立诗歌团体“吼社”。1945年，他参加文艺团体 “九一社”。战后，他主编过《琼潮报》及《爱华周报》。
1967年，他担任《新野》的编委。1970年，他担任《新马华文文学大系》编委会委员， 编辑《史料》、《散文》等。
1977年开始，赵戎以芸窻为笔名，出版《热带风情画》、《楼上花枝笑独眠》、《神媒》、《我们这一伙》和《周末篇》等。
他的创作强调写实主义和爱国主义，主张吸取地方方言以丰富文学艺术的语言。他的小说经常表现多姿多彩的热带题材，通过城市风情、海峡风光、渔村景色、蕉风椰雨的描绘，并围绕人们的活动，深入人物的内心世界，进行细致的描写。
他的小说多以青年知识分子为描写对象，反映了中华民族的文化意识和外国文化意识的矛盾冲突及相互渗透。他的代表作《在马六甲海峡》、《海恋》、《芭洋上》等作品中就着重塑造青年知识分子。这些人物在赵戎笔下充满生命的火力、昂扬的热情、向上的精神，给读者留下难以忘怀的印象。
除了小说以外，赵戎也写文艺评论如《论马华作家与作品》、《赵戎文艺论文集》等。
他费时七年编写完成的辞典《新马华文文艺词典》，对研究马华华文文艺的人士，有很大的帮助。
赵戎除了埋首创作外，对苗秀、李汝琳、韦晕、梦平、柳北岸、冰谷、叶苔痕、君绍、史可扬、叶苗等作家都曾为文评论或引介。
赵戎认为：“搞文学是不需要学历的，作品就是文凭。”他最仰慕的中国作家是鲁迅，萧军，胡风，聂绀弩，巴人还有何其芳。至于新马华文作家，他特别推荐苗秀和韦晕的小说。
Zhao Rong's real name is Zhao Dacheng and he was born in Singapore in 1920.
With his working mandate as “one does not need qualifications to be an author, his works are his qualifications”, he contributed greatly to the nation's literary development as a novelist and literary critic.
He had various occupations in his youth before taking up a permanent teaching position at Chung Cheng Secondary School until he retired in 1978.
Zhao Rong began his literary career in 1936 by writing for various newspapers and periodicals. He was also an editor for several Chinese newspapers. In 1970, he was invited to be a member of the editorial committee for the book, An Anthology of Singapore-Malaya Chinese Literature, and was in charge of the sections on history and short essays.
Apart from novels, which he started publishing from 1977, Zhao Rong also wrote literary criticisms that were published into several books. He also took seven years to compile the Dictionary of Singapore-Malaya Chinese Literature which is a useful resource for researchers.
Zhao Rong passed away in 1988.
