P Krishnan, who has been writing under the pseudonym Puthumaithasan, is a prolific writer. Born in Johore in 1931, he came to Singapore to sit for his Senior Cambridge examination and settled here. Because of his love for the Tamil language, Krishnan took his own initiative to master the language by visiting libraries and borrowing books on ancient literature to present day literature and grammar. This made him an authority on Tamil literature and grammar.
In the early 1950s he was a frequent contributor of short stories and articles to Tamil Murasu, Singapore's Tamil daily as well as Malaysia's Tamil Nesan, Malaysia's Tamil daily. He was also a regular participant in literary debates. A founder member of the then Association of Singapore Tamil Writers in 1953, he also briefly served as its secretary. After joining Radio Singapore in 1962, he wrote about 500 radio plays and short stories for broadcast. His radio play 'Adukku Veettu Annasamy', a 52-episode hilarious drama, based on life in HDB flats, shot him to fame in the mid 1960s. He wrote another 52-episode sequel, ‘Maadi Veettu Mangalam', which was also well received. Krishnan translated Shakespeare's Macbeth into Tamil, which was staged by the Ravindran Drama Group. Some of Krishnan's short stories were also translated into English.
In 1992, Krishnan was awarded the Efficiency Medal. In 1994, he received the Merit Award from the National Book Development Council of Singapore for his collection of short stories. He received the Thamizhavel literary award from the Association of Singapore Tamil Writers in 1998 and in 2005, he received the Southeast Asian Write Award for his literary contributions. At the age of 74, Krishnan is still an active writer.
